32 Teams in 32 Days — Day 24: Team Eun-Jung Kim
We’re profiling 32 teams — one per day — as we get ready for the start of the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season at the Masters.
Day 24: Team Eun-Jung Kim
Lineup: Eun-Jung Kim (skip), Kyeong-Ae Kim (third), Cho-Hi Kim (second), Seon-Yeong Kim (lead), Yeong-Mi Kim (alternate)
Home Club: Gangneung CC; Gangneung, South Korea
The members of Team Kim use English names on the ice to improve their language skills: Annie, Steak, Chocho, Sunny and Pancake.
Team Kim made their Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling debut at the inaugural Tour Challenge in 2015 in Paradise, Newfoundland and Labrador, and immediately proved they were contenders by qualifying for the playoffs and reaching the semifinals.
Kim captured back-to-back Pacific-Asia championships gold medals in 2016 and 2017.
They became internationally known during the 2018 Winter Olympic Games on home ice in South Korea as the “Garlic Girls” based on their hometown of Uiseong’s famous export. Kim topped the round-robin standings with an 8-1 record. They defeated Japan’s Team Fujisawa 8-7 in an extra end during the semifinals to reach the gold medal game. Team Kim earned the silver medal losing 8-3 to Sweden’s Team Hasselborg.
After the Olympic season, Team Kim took time off from curling as they were involved in a dispute with the national sport governing body accusing their coaches of abusive treatment.
Team Kim captured the Korean women’s curling championship during the 2020-21 season and competed in the Calgary bubble during the world women’s curling championship. It was Team Kim’s third time representing South Korea at the worlds, and they finished in a three-way tie with Canada and the United States for fifth place with a 7-6 record but missed the playoffs due to an 0-2 head-to-head record.
The Masters kicks off the 2021-22 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season and runs Oct. 19-24 at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Ontario. Full event and weekend passes plus single draw tickets are now available, CLICK HERE to purchase yours today.
