32 Teams in 32 Days — Day 14: Team Fujisawa
We’re profiling 32 teams — one per day — as we get ready for the start of the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season at the Masters.
Day 14: Team Fujisawa
Lineup: Satsuki Fujisawa (skip), Chinami Yoshida (third), Yumi Suzuki (second), Yurika Yoshida (lead)
Hometown: Kitami, Japan
Team Fujisawa defeated Team Yoshimura 3-2 in a best-of-five series earlier this month in their Olympic trials but will still need to compete in a qualifier event in order to book their spot to the 2022 Beijing Winter Games.
Fujisawa is the reigning Olympic bronze medallist. Team Fujisawa captured Japan’s first Olympic medal in curling at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, defeating Great Britain’s Team Muirhead 5-3 in the bronze medal match.
They were also the first Japanese foursome to reach the podium at the world curling championship taking silver in 2016.
Team Fujisawa played as a trio during last season’s Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling events as Yurika Yoshida was away preparing for the world mixed doubles championship. The team lost in the tiebreakers during the Champions Cup and miss the playoffs but bounced back to reach the quarterfinals during the Princess Auto Players’ Championship.
A funny moment occurred during their Players’ Championship quarterfinal game as Fujisawa threw one of Team Hasselborg’s rocks by mistake.
The Masters kicks off the 2021-22 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season and runs Oct. 19-24 at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Ontario. Full event and weekend passes plus single draw tickets are now available, CLICK HERE to purchase yours today.
