Gushue gets by Mouat to reach Co-op Canadian Open semifinals

CAMROSE, Alta. — Team Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., advanced to the final four of the Co-op Canadian Open with a 6-2 victory over Scotland’s Team Bruce Mouat during Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Gushue will go up against familiar foes Team Niklas Edin during the evening semifinals after the Swedish squad stopped Team Korey Dropkin from the United States by a 6-2 score as well.

The two teams have faced off 37 times previously including earlier this season in the Boost National men’s final where Gushue claimed his 14th Grand Slam title in an extra end.

The other men’s semifinal matchup will see Calgary’s Team Brendan Bottcher facing Team Joël Retornaz from Italy.

Bottcher advanced with a 5-0 shutout over Team Yannick Schwaller from Switzerland while Retornaz took down Winnipeg’s Team Matt Dunstone 8-2.

It’s a rematch from last month’s WFG Masters semis where Bottcher blanked the first six ends before giving up a steal in the seventh and settling for a single in the eighth. With the first crack of the hammer, Retornaz took two in the extra end to win 3-1 en route to capturing his first Grand Slam men’s title.
