Whyte continues wild week at WFG Masters after ousting Gushue in quarterfinals

SASKATOON — Scotland’s Team Ross Whyte took down top-seed Team Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., 5-2 Saturday in the men’s quarterfinals of the WFG Masters.

Gushue held the hammer in the seventh end with the game tied 2-all, but the 14-time Grand Slam men’s champion rolled heavy on his last shot and gave up a critical three points.

It’s been a wild week for Whyte, who won his first couple games of the major tournament before losing the next two and needing a 5-3 win over Sweden’s Team Niklas Edin in an early Saturday morning tiebreaker just to qualify for the playoffs.

Whyte will take on Yannick Schwaller in the semifinals after the Swiss squad eliminated Winnipeg’s Team Matt Dunstone 6-4.

Calgary’s Team Brendan Bottcher will play defending champs Team Joël Retornaz from Italy in a rematch from last year’s semifinals.

Bottcher beat Team Magnus Ramsfjell of Norway 8-3 and Retornaz ousted Winnipeg’s Team Reid Carruthers 5-1.

Ottawa’s Team Rachel Homan faces Winnipeg’s Team Jennifer Jones and Team Kerri Einarson of Gimli, Man., goes up against Switzerland’s Team Silvana Tirinzoni in the women’s semifinals.

Watch the men’s and women’s semifinals live at 7:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. local time on Sportsnet ONE and Sportsnet+ (Canada) or GSOClive.com (international).
