Team Homan double up Team Cameron for first win at Co-op Canadian Open

RED DEER, Alta. — Rachel Homan and her Ottawa-based club claimed a 6-3 victory over Winnipeg’s Team Kate Cameron to begin their run in the Co-op Canadian Open on Tuesday at Servus Arena.

Chelsea Carey, who captured the Canadian Open women’s title in 2018, is subbing for skip Kate Cameron (work commitments) this week.

Carey opened with the hammer but came up short on a draw in the first end to give up a single steal. After Carey regrouped to score one in the second, Homan drew for two in the third to hold a 3-1 advantage.

The teams exchanged singles in four and five, Carey was held to another lone point in the sixth and Homan added insurance with another draw for a deuce in seven.

That gave Team Cameron the hammer coming home but they ran out of rocks before reaching skip stones.

Homan won a record-extending 14th Grand Slam of Curling women’s title last month in the WFG Masters.

Elsewhere in Draw 2, Sweden’s Team Isabella Wranå also earned a 6-3 victory against Team Kaitlyn Lawes of Winnipeg.

South Korea’s Team Eun-Ji Gim downed Team Strouse from the United States 8-2 and Sweden’s Team Anna Hasselborg came back to beat South Korea’s Team Eun-Jung Kim 5-4 in an extra end.

Hasselborg had one second left on her time clock when she made her final shot of the eighth end to score an equalizing deuce and force the additional frame. She then made a clutch draw with her last in the extra to secure shot rock and Kim was unable to outcount it.
