Toronto to host Players’ Championship for 4th time in 5 years

Toronto will play host to the Players’ Championship for the third consecutive season and the fourth time in five years.

The crown jewel of the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling returns to Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre from April 11-16, 2017.

Team Muirhead of Scotland have won the women’s title all three previous times the Players’ Championship has been held at the venue and defeated Winnipeg’s Team Jones for the crown last season. Team Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., took home the men’s title with a win over Team Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. Skip Brad Gushue became just the fifth skip in history to complete a career Grand Slam.

The Players’ Championship is the fourth and final major of the season and is one of the original events in the series alongside the Masters, National, and Canadian Open.

Teams also compete for the Rogers Grand Slam Cup, awarded following the conclusion of the event to the overall season bonus points winners. Nearly double points are on the line at the Players’ Championship making it a chase down to the wire. Gushue and Ottawa’s Team Homan are the defending champions.

Winners are guaranteed berths to the Humpty’s Champions Cup, the season-ending Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event featuring all of the top champions from the year in one final showdown.
