Top-ranked Homan, Mouat headline field for AMJ Players’ Championship

The field has been finalized for the AMJ Players’ Championship.

The Grand Slam of Curling announced the teams and pools on Friday for its fifth and final event of the season running April 8-13 at Toronto’s Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The top 12 men’s teams and top 12 women’s teams from around the globe were invited to the AMJ Players’ Championship.

World No. 1 Team Homan leads the way in the women’s division. The Canadian club has reached all four Grand Slam women’s finals this season, winning back-to-back titles at the Co-op Canadian Open and KIOTI National and finishing runner-up at the HearingLife Tour Challenge and WFG Masters.

Switzerland’s Team Tirinzoni will look to repeat as the women’s champion. Tirinzoni topped Sweden’s Team Wranå 6-5 in last year’s final.

Team Mouat headlines the men’s side as the top-ranked club. The Scottish squad captured three consecutive Grand Slam men’s titles in the fall at the HearingLife Tour Challenge, Co-op Canadian Open and KIOTI National.

Team Gushue will return to defend the men’s title. Skip Brad Gushue made a clutch draw to score the winning point in the eighth end to edge Team Retornaz 7-6 during last year’s final to earn his 15th Grand Slam title.

Each team will play five games against teams within their pool. The best six teams following the conclusion of round-robin play will advance to the playoffs with the top two teams receiving byes to the semifinals.

Now that the teams and pools are set, the full match schedule will be announced in the coming days.

Before the AMJ Players’ Championship begins, Team Homan and Team Mouat will clash in the first-ever Rio Mare Battle of the Sexes match on April 7.
