Throwback Thursday: 2014 Canadian Open top plays

We’re just days away from the start of the 2015 Meridian Canadian Open, beginning Tuesday night in Yorkton, Sask.

Since the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling series is making a return trip to the Gallagher Centre for the third major of the season, let’s rewind to last year and watch the best moments of the 2014 Canadian Open.

Bottcher “only” gives up one

The first men’s A qualifier final featured a Battle of Alberta between Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher and Calgary’s Kevin Koe.

Bottcher already trailed 2-0 and looked to be in deep trouble in the third end facing multiple Koe counters, but watch as he makes the angle raise to eliminate four stones from play to “only” give up a steal of one.

Cotter scores five … twice

We might have a case deja vu while returning to the Gallagher Centre in a few days, but what if I told you we already experienced that feeling during last year’s event?

Jim Cotter, of Vernon, B.C., made an open draw to score five points and win 8-3 against Switzerland’s Sven Michel during their B-side match.

Impressive.

Then Cotter pulled it once more in the B-side finals against Bottcher, this time making an open hit for another five-count to win 8-3 again. It was sweeter the second time around as it also secured his team a playoff spot.

Most impressive.

Feltscher nails angle raise for the win

Speaking of qualifying shots, watch Switzerland’s Binia Feltscher make the angle raise in the final end against American Nina Roth to score the winning point in their C-side final to advance to the quarterfinals.

Gushue steals spot in final

Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., qualified for the playoffs through the C-side, defeated Brad Jacobs 7-5 in the quarterfinals and then stole his way through the semis with a 5-4 victory over Koe.

Watch as Koe’s final shot coming home rolls past the button and Gushue swipes a spot in the men’s final.

Muirhead makes history at Canadian Open

Scotland’s Eve Muirhead entered the record books as the inaugural women’s champion at the Canadian Open.

Muirhead etched her name onto the trophy with a 5-3 victory over Ottawa’s Rachel Homan.

Here are the full highlights from the women’s final:

Gushue edges Laycock to win men’s title

Yorkton-born Steve Laycock went on a remarkable run as he reached the final of a Pinty’s GSOC event for the first time in his career as a skip, facing Gushue for the Canadian Open title.

Gushue held the hammer coming home, down by a point, but not down on luck as he made an incredible final shot that was swept perfectly by Geoff Walker and Brett Gallant to grab enough of the button to count for two and score the 6-5 victory and the Canadian Open championship.
