Murdoch eliminates Stoughton at Canadian Open

YORKTON, Sask. — David Murdoch of Scotland slid past Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton 8-3 in six ends during a must-win C bracket game in Draw 10 action Friday morning at the Canadian Open.

The Olympic silver medallist Murdoch pulled ahead with a deuce in the third and stole two in the fourth to lead 5-2. Stoughton was forced to a single in five and Murdoch sealed the game with a three-ender in the sixth.

Murdoch improved to a 1-2 record to remain in contention while Stoughton saw his tournament come to an end early at 0-3.

Charlottetown’s Adam Casey (1-2) also held off elimination with a 7-3 victory over Switzerland’s Sven Michel (0-3). Casey scored three in the fourth to go up 4-2 and finished things off with a deuce in six followed by a steal of one in seven.

American Nina Roth (1-2) took complete control after the break to earn a 10-6 victory over Alli Flaxey of Listowel, Ont. Flaxey, who is out of the tournament at 0-3, scored three-enders in the second and fourth to hold a four-point advantage, but Roth rallied with a deuce in the fifth, a steal of one in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont., also moved up to a 1-2 record scoring a deuce in the seventh to win 7-5 and knock out Regina’s Chantelle Eberle (0-3).
