Live Blog: Carey captures Canadian Open title

CAMROSE, Alta. — Chelsea Carey claimed her first career Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling title at the Meridian Canadian Open.

Carey’s Calgary crew defeated Michelle Englot’s Winnipeg team 10-5 in Sunday’s final to earn $30,000 plus a berth in the season-ending Humpty’s Champions Cup taking place April 24-29 in their hometown at WinSport Arena.

Here’s how it all went down:

1ST END: Carey takes two to make a thing go right. Starting with the hammer, Carey converted on an open hit to score a deuce. CAREY 2, ENGLOT 0

2ND END: Carey swung and miss on a takeout as her last flew by untouched. Englot eased her last into the paint to knot it up. CAREY 2, ENGLOT 2

3RD END: From downtown for three! Carey doubles two Englot rocks to score a trey. CAREY 5, ENGLOT 2

4TH END: Talk about missed opportunities. Carey hit and rolled out on her last to leave Englot an opportunity to strike for three. Englot couldn’t quite cash it in as she also landed off the nose on Carey’s other stone and slid across and out the rings for only two points. CAREY 5, ENGLOT 4

5TH END: Englot looked to have locked on for shot stone, but Carey broke out the anti-freeze to kick it out the side to ace it. CAREY 6, ENGLOT 4

6TH END: The force was strong in this end. Englot hits, rolls and catches her own to stick around for a single. CAREY 6, ENGLOT 5

7TH END: Bagels on the board as Carey avoids wrecking on the guard to hit, roll and blank to retain the all-important hammer coming home. CAREY 6, ENGLOT 5

8TH END: You’ve got it, Chels. Carey doubles down to eliminate Englot’s two counters, scores four and wins the championship. CAREY 10, ENGLOT 5
