Fan favourite Laycock reaches final at Canadian Open
YORKTON, Sask. — Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock is off to his first Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling men’s final as a skip at the Canadian Open and in front of his fans no less.
The Yorkton-born Laycock advanced to the championship game after grabbing the winning single in the eighth end to edge Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher 6-5 during the semifinals Saturday night.
Laycock will play Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., in Sunday’s final. Gushue, who captured the Masters last month in Selkirk, Man., made it to his second Slam final of the season after scoring a deuce in seven and stealing one in the final frame to edge Calgary’s Kevin Koe 5-4.
