Kevin Martin wins Canadian Open to earn 4th straight Grand Slam title

QUEBEC CITY — Kevin Martin has picked up where he left off in the Grand Slam of Curling.

Martin captured the Canadian Open to earn a fourth consecutive title in the series, dating back to last season, by defeating Shawn Adams 6-2 in Sunday’s final.

Martin, third John Morris, second Marc Kennedy and lead Ben Hebert earned $25,000 with the victory. The Edmonton-based team won the Canadian Open, Masters and Players’ Championship titles last season.

Martin opened the scoring with a deuce in the first end off an open takeout and capitalized on an Adams misfire in the fourth to add another pair to lead 4-1 at the break. Martin drew for two more points in the seventh to put away the game.

Martin finished the round-robin portion with a 4-1 record earning a 7-4 win over Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton and an 8-3 victory over Martin Ferland of Trois-Rivières, Que., to reach the final.

The Halifax-based Team Adams claimed $18,000.
