Jones, Homan face again in semifinals at Co-op Canadian Open

RED DEER, Alta. — New year, same final four in the women’s division of the Grand Slam of Curling.

Winnipeg’s Team Jennifer Jones will face Ottawa’s Team Rachel Homan and Team Kerri Einarson of Gimli, Man., go up against Switzerland’s Team Silvana Tirinzoni in the semifinals of the Co-op Canadian Open.

Deja vu? It’s the same matchups that took place during last month’s WFG Masters.

The scenario came to be following Saturday’s quarterfinals at Servus Arena.

Jones edged Sweden’s Team Anna Hasselborg 6-5 in an extra end, Homan shaded South Korea’s Team Eun-Ji Gim 6-3, Einarson eliminated Japan’s Team Satsuki Fujisawa 5-3 and Tirinzoni topped South Korea’s Team Eun-Jung Kim 8-5.

Jones and Einarson will aim to make sure it’s not an identical final as well. Homan beat Tirinzoni in the WFG Masters championship game to capture a record-extending 14th Grand Slam women’s title.

Earlier Saturday, Jones also triumphed over Team Tabitha Peterson of the United States 5-3 in a morning tiebreaker to qualify.

Team Brad Gushue eliminated Switzerland’s Team Yannick Schwaller 6-4, Calgary’s Team Brendan Bottcher bounced Winnipeg’s Matt Dunstone 7-3, Scotland’s Team Ross Whyte dispatched Italy’s Team Joël Retornaz 5-4 and Mouat ousted Team James Craik 5-4 in an all-Scottish game during the men’s quarterfinals.

Gushue will clash with Bottcher while Mouat meets Whyte in an all-Scottish matchup in the semifinals.
