Jones edges Rocque at Meridian Canadian Open
YORKTON, Sask. — Reigning Olympic champion Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg drew to the button in the eighth end to edge Edmonton’s Kelsey Rocque 6-5 Thursday in the Meridian Canadian Open.
Jones (2-0) advanced to the triple knockout A-qualifiers while Rocque (1-1) slid into the B event.
Jones will play Edmonton’s Val Sweeting, who scored an 8-3 victory over Tour Challenge winner Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland to also move up to 2-0.
In the B event, European champion Anna Sidorova of Russia earned a 5-3 win against Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson, Tracy Fleury of Sudbury, Ont., dispatched Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald 9-4 and Calgary’s Chelsea Carey took down Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont., 8-5. Sidorova and Fleury both improved to 1-1 records, Carey climbed to 2-1, Sigfridsson and McDonald dropped to 0-2 and Middaugh fell to 1-2.
