Homan, Muirhead slide into Canadian Open women’s semifinals
YORKTON, Sask. — Ottawa’s Rachel Homan topped Binia Feltscher 7-3 during the Canadian Open women’s quarterfinals Saturday.
Homan, who shot a nearly perfect 98 percent, scored deuces in the second and four ends while holding Feltscher to a single in the third to lead 4-1 at the break. The reigning world champion Feltscher fell into a deeper hole in the fifth when her final shot picked and stopped short of the free-guard zone to hand Homan three stolen points.
Feltscher, who defeated Homan to capture the world championship gold medal in March, settled for a single in six and stole one in seven but couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Homan will now face Heather Nedohin, who scored three sets of three-enders to defeat Chelsea Carey 9-3 in five ends in an all-Edmonton match-up to advance to the semifinals.
Eve Muirhead of Scotland meets Edmonton’s Val Sweeting on the other side of the bracket.
Muirhead scored three in the eighth end to eliminate Olympic gold medallist Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg 8-5 and Sweeting held off Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont., 5-4.
The men’s semifinals see Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher take on Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock and Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., go up against Calgary’s Kevin Koe.
