Homan, Muirhead punch tickets to first Canadian Open women’s final
YORKTON, Sask. — Ottawa’s Rachel Homan made Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling history as the first Masters women’s champion and now has the opportunity to become the first Canadian Open women’s title winner as well.
Homan edged Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin 4-3 in an extra end during the Canadian Open semifinals Saturday night to advance to Sunday’s championship game.
The Canadian Open has been held annually since the inaugural Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season in 2001-02 but was previously a men’s invitational until this year when it was expanded to include a women’s division.
Homan, who won back-to-back Masters titles in 2012 and 2013, will meet Scotland’s Eve Muirhead, who defeated Edmonton’s Val Sweeting 6-3. The 2013 Players’ Championship winner Muirhead broke a 2-2 tie with a score of four in the sixth. Sweeting, who took home this season’s Masters last month, was forced to a single in the seventh and ran out of rocks in the eighth.
