Carey prevails over McDonald to qualify at Canadian Open
YORKTON, Sask. — Edmonton’s Chelsea Carey advanced to the Canadian Open quarterfinals after scoring three in the eighth to pull out a 9-7 win over Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald in B-qualifier action Friday.
Carey moves onto the quarterfinals with a 3-1 record through the triple knockout preliminary stage. McDonald, who previously played third for Carey, dropped to a 2-2 record and must win her final C-qualifier game to stay in the tournament.
After McDonald settled for one to start, the teams alternated identical points back and forth with singles in two and three, deuces in four and five and three-enders in six and seven as Carey held the hammer coming home trailing by one.
Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin (3-1) prevailed 5-3 over reigning world champion Binia Feltscher (2-2) of Switzerland to reach the quarterfinals through the other B qualifier game. Nedohin settled for a single in the first and stole one in the second to establish the two-point gap and stayed one step ahead of Feltscher as the teams traded single points through to the end.
Winnipeg’s Jill Thurston (2-2) scored a deuce in the fourth, stole one in five and two in six during a 9-6 victory to eliminate Regina’s Amber Holland (1-3) in a C bracket match.
In the men’s division, Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock (3-1) is through to the quarterfinals after scoring two in the fifth and stealing a pair in six to pull out a 6-4 victory over Toronto’s John Epping in the B qualifier game. Epping (2-2) drops to the C side.
Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers edged Niklas Edin of Sweden 8-7 with a single in the extra end of their C event match. Carruthers (2-2) scored three in the seventh and Edin (1-3) tied it with two in eight.
