Sweeting steals win from McDonald to qualify at Players’ Championship

TORONTO — Edmonton’s Val Sweeting has clinched a playoff spot at the Players’ Championship after stealing a 5-4 victory in an extra end over Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald during Draw 10 Friday morning at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Sweeting qualified with a 4-1 record and one round-robin game remaining. McDonald finished the round-robin portion early with a 2-3 record and could still make the tiebreakers pending the results of the other draws.

Trailing by two, Sweeting held the hammer in eight and drew for a deuce to force the extra end. Sweeting sat shot rock buried and McDonald was unable to remove the counter.

Elsewhere, Scotland’s Eve Muirhead scored four in the third and rolled right past Binia Fletscher of Switzerland 11-3 in six ends. The 2013 Players’ Championship winner Muirhead improved to a 3-1 record while Feltscher fell to 1-3.

Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin took two in the extra end for an 8-6 victory to hand Alina Paetz of Switzerland her first defeat of the tournament. The reigning world champion Paetz sits at 3-1 while Nedohin holds a 2-2 record.

Russia’s Anna Sidorova (2-2) stole a point in the extra end to win 8-7 over Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones (1-3). Sidorova sat two locked together and Jones jammed the double takeout attempt.
