Sidorova defeats Nedohin to stay in Masters mix

SELKIRK, Man. — Russia’s Anna Sidorova broke a tie with a four-ender in the sixth end and beat Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin 8-5 Friday afternoon to stay in the playoff race at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling.

Sidorova improved to a 2-1 record with one round-robin game remaining against Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones (2-1) in the evening draw.

The 2012 Canadian champion Nedohin was eliminated with a 1-3 record.

Elsewhere, Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont., scored three in the seventh and stole one in the eighth to claim a 6-5 victory over Edmonton’s Chelsea Carey. Middaugh finishes the round robin with a 2-2 record to guarantee a tiebreaker or a quarterfinal spot while Carey (1-2) plays Ottawa’s Rachel Homan (2-1) in Draw 13.

Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald (2-2) stole one in the third and two in the fourth during a 5-2 win over Saskatoon’s Sherry Anderson (1-2).

In the men’s division, Olympic champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., stole four in the fourth and two in the fifth during an 8-1 rout over Jim Cotter of Vernon, B.C. Jacobs (1-2) earned his first win at the Masters to stay in contention and faces Niklas Edin of Sweden in Draw 13 to wrap up pool play. Cotter is heading home winless at 0-4.

Switzerland’s Peter de Cruz scored four in the fifth to end his Masters run on a high note with a 7-2 win over Scotland’s David Murdoch. Both De Cruz and Murdoch missed the cut finishing pool play with 1-3 records.
