Scotties champ Homan strengthens hold atop world rankings

Women’s world No. 1 Team Homan has put some extra distance on the rest of the field in the world rankings.

Team Homan successfully defended the Scotties Tournament of Hearts title with another impressive 11-0 undefeated run through the Canadian women’s curling championship. The Ottawa-based club capped the week with a 6-1 victory over Team Einarson in Sunday’s final in Thunder Bay, Ont.

Homan now tops the world rankings with 447.5 points — 135.4 points over No. 2 Team Tirinzoni of Switzerland.

The Gimli, Man.-based Team Einarson (300.8 points) climbed two spots in the rankings, moving up to No. 4, with the runner-up result.

Team Homan will now look to repeat at the world women’s curling championship, March 15-23, in Uijeongbu, South Korea.

With the qualification cutoff date for the AMJ Players’ Championship just two weeks away, the pressure has ramped up for teams on the bubble as only the top 12 men’s and women’s teams are guaranteed invites to the fifth and final Grand Slam of Curling event of the season.

Team Dropkin (191.5 points) maintains hold of No. 12 in the men’s division as No. 13 Team Edin (187.9) lost in the quarterfinals of the Sun City Cup on home ice in Sweden this past weekend and did not earn enough points to surpass the American squad.

Sweden’s Team Wranå (206.5 points) captured the title on the women’s side and leapfrogged Canada’s Team Skrlik (200.6) for No. 12 in the women’s rankings.

Wranå, the 2023 Players’ Championship winner and last year’s runner-up, defeated Switzerland’s Team Schwaller 7-4 in the final.
