Muirhead, Homan score big wins in Players’ Championship round-robin
SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Eve Muirhead of Scotland and Ottawa’s Rachel Homan improved to 2-0 records at the Players’ Championship with big wins Wednesday afternoon at Credit Union Place.
The defending champion Muirhead scored six points in the seventh end to crush Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton in an 11-4 victory and reigning Masters champion Homan earned an 8-1 rout over Calgary’s Crystal Webster in just five ends of play. Homan opened the scoring with a three-ender in the second and added a steal of three in the third.
Both Lawton and Webster are 1-1 in the Grand Slam of Curling season finale.
Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland also sits atop of the table at 2-0 after earning a 6-4 win over Sherry Middaugh (0-2) of Coldwater, Ont.
Olympic gold medallist Jennifer Jones improved to a 1-1 record with an 9-8 extra-end victory over Julie Hastings (0-2) of Thornhill, Ont.
Edmonton’s Valerie Sweeting fell 10-6 to Olympic silver medallist Margaretha Sigfridsson of Sweden. Sigfridsson trailed 6-5 after six ends but rallied with a deuce in the seventh and a steal of three in final end.
