Mouat slams Schwaller in WFG Masters men’s quarterfinals

GUELPH, Ont. — Bruce Mouat’s quest for a fourth consecutive Grand Slam of Curling men’s title continues at the WFG Masters.

Mouat and his Scottish squad scored a decisive 8-2 victory over Switzerland’s Team Yannick Schwaller during Saturday’s quarterfinals.

The nine-time Grand Slam champion Mouat got out to a hot start with a count of three in the first — or a hat trick if you will — and added another trio of points in the sixth to ice the game early.

Team Mouat will take on Team Brad Jacobs in the evening semifinals and a rematch of last month’s KIOTI National championship game. The Calgary-based club advanced with a 7-4 win over Germany’s Team Marc Muskatewitz.

Winnipeg’s Team Matt Dunstone meets Team Ross Whyte of Scotland in the other semifinal matchup.

Dunstone ousted Team Korey Dropkin of the United States 7-5 and Whyte eliminated Sweden’s Team Niklas Edin 5-2.

Dropkin and Schwaller snuck into the playoffs through the morning tiebreakers. Dropkin defeated Team John Epping of Sudbury, Ont., 8-5 and Schwaller swept past Italy’s Team Joël Retornaz 8-1 in only five ends to qualify.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Team Satsuki Fujisawa and Team Momoha Tabata advanced to the women’s quarterfinals through the tiebreakers.

Fujisawa stole the winning point in the extra end to edge Winnipeg’s Team Kaitlyn Lawes 5-4 and Tabata topped Ottawa’s Team Danielle Inglis 6-4.

Sweden’s Team Anna Hasselborg will play Tabata with South Korea’s Team Eun-jung Kim facing Fujisawa.

Ottawa’s Team Rachel Homan takes on Team Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland and Sweden’s Team Isabella Wranå goes up against Team Kerri Einarson of Gimli, Man., in the other women’s quarterfinal matchups.
