Mouat, Jacobs continue solid starts at WFG Masters
GUELPH, Ont. — Scotland’s Team Bruce Mouat and Team Brad Jacobs of Calgary picked up their second wins in as many days at the WFG Masters.
Team Mouat defeated Switzerland’s Team Marco Hösli 7-2 and Team Jacobs brushed aside Team Korey Dropkin of the United States 10-4 during Draw 5 Wednesday morning.
Mouat, who is seeking a fourth consecutive Grand Slam title, got out to a textbook first half scoring deuces in the first and third ends with Hösli limited to singles in the the second and fourth to lead 4-2 at the break. After Mouat added another pair of points in the fifth, Hösli (1-1) gave up a single steal in the sixth and shook hands.
Jacobs jumped out to an 8-0 lead with a count of three off the bat in the first followed by steals of two in the third and three in the fourth. Dropkin (1-1) bounced back big time and cut the deficit in half with a score of four points in the fifth, but he conceded after Jacobs tacked two more points on the board in the sixth.
In other games, Saskatoon’s Team Mike McEwen defeated Team John Epping of Sudbury, Ont., 8-6 and Team Niklas Edin of Sweden picked up a 7-4 victory over Winnipeg’s Team Jordon McDonald.
McEwen and Edin improved to 1-1 records while both Epping and McDonald fell to 0-2.

The WFG Masters is the fourth Grand Slam of Curling event of the season featuring 16 of the top men’s teams and 16 of the top women’s teams from around the world. … The top eight in both divisions qualify for the playoffs. … If necessary, one tiebreaker round will be held Saturday morning. … The quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Saturday with both finals slated for Sunday. … A new rule is being tested this week where teams will lose the hammer if they blank two consecutive ends.
