Masters Mondays: McEwen makes shot of the year

Welcome to Masters Mondays, as we count down to the 2015 Masters by looking back at the history of the event.

To kick things off here for Masters Mondays, we might as well get this one out of the way first as it was not only the highlight of the 2014 Masters, it was the highlight of the 2014-15 Pinty’s GSOC season (and maybe even the entire history of the series … hyperbole much?)

The 2014 Masters saw the red-hot Team Mike McEwen of Winnipeg take on Team Brad Gushue of St. John’s in the men’s final. Team McEwen won four consecutive World Curling Tour events to open the 2014-15 season and looked to take title No. 5 in their own backyard in Selkirk, Man.

It was Team Gushue who struck big first scoring four in the fifth end to take a 6-2 lead. McEwen charged right back though, matching with a four-ender of his own in the sixth to knot it up in dramatic fashion.

We here at Grand Slam HQ still haven’t found the right adjective to describe this shot that does it justice so we’re just going to pull a Vince McMahon and say “what-a-manoeuvre!”

McEwen’s unbelievable shot made it’s way around the web, popped up on Tim & Sid (#FriendsOfTheShow) and even south of the border to ESPN where they called it the best curling shot they’ve ever seen.

However, let’s not forget how the game actually ended. Kudos to Team Gushue for not letting the miraculous shot deflate their own momentum as they scored a deuce in the seventh end to reclaim the lead and held on for the 8-6 victory to capture the Masters championship.
