Masters Mondays: Howard tops Martin in 2013 final
We’re counting down to the 2015 Masters by looking back at the top moments in the history of the event.
This week we rewind to the 2013 men’s final in Abbotsford, B.C. featuring Glenn Howard against Kevin Martin.
Like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in tennis, any time Howard and Martin clashed in curling it was an epic meeting between two titans. They’ve won just about everything in the sport and sit at the top of the all-time Pinty’s GSOC wins list.
The 2013 final saw Howard come out on top with a 7-4 victory thanks to a sizzling angle raise to punch out Martin’s stone and score four in the fifth end.
Howard, second Brent Laing and lead Craig Savill earned their record sixth Masters title while vice skip Wayne Middaugh captured his third.
It was the last time they would face off with a Grand Slam championship on the line as Martin retired at the end of the season after winning his record 18th GSOC title at Players’ Championship.
This concludes our Masters Mondays series. The 2015 tournament kicks off Tuesday night at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre in Truro, N.S. CLICK HERE for ticket information.
