Stefanie Lawton tops Cathy Overton-Clapham to win Players’ Championship
SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Stefanie Lawton claimed her first career Grand Slam of Curling title with a 7-3 win over Cathy Overton-Clapham in Saturday’s final at the Players’ Championship.
The Saskatoon-based team of Lawton, third Sherry Anderson, second Sherri Singler and lead Marliese Kasner earned $28,000.
Tied 2-2 at the midway mark, Lawton gave up a steal of one and the lead in the fifth end when she missed on her blank attempt.
Lawton bounced back big time with a hit-and-stick for three in the sixth end to pull back into the lead 5-3 and iced the game with a steal of two in the seventh as the rinks shook hands.
The Winnipeg-based team of Overton-Clapham, third Jenna Loder, second Ashley Howard, and lead Breanne Meakin were awarded the Capital One Cup as the overall season championship.
Overton-Clapham topped the round-robin table with a 6-1 record to qualify while Lawton finished the preliminary stage at 5-2. Lawton doubled up on Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones 6-3 during the semifinals while Overton-Clapham edged Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont., 7-6 in an extra end to reach the final.
