Lawton downs Nedohin at Players’ Championship
SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton defeated Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin 5-1 in seven ends to start Wednesday’s action at the Players’ Championship at Credit Union Place.
Lawton, who won the Grand Slam title in this very rink in 2012, broke a 1-1 tie with a single in the third and pulled away with steals of one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Nedohin has already dropped to a 0-2 record and on the verge of elimination after falling to Ottawa’s Rachel Homan during the opening draw Tuesday night.
Scotties Tournament of Hearts finalist Val Sweeting scored three in the eighth to lift her Edmonton club to an 8-7 win over Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont.
Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson was victorious 6-3 over Julie Hastings of Thornhill, Ont. The Olympic silver medallist Sigfridsson broke a late tie with a deuce in the seventh and sealed the victory with a steal of one in the eighth.
Calgary’s Crystal Webster topped Michele Jaeggi of Switzerland with a three-count in the extra end to win 7-4.
