Lawton caps Players’ Championship round-robin with perfect record
TORONTO — Defending champion Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon finished round-robin play with an unblemished 4-0 record after defeating Calgary’s Shannon Kleibrink 6-3 Friday morning at the Players’ Championship.
Lawton captured her first Grand Slam title at the event last year in Summerside, P.E.I.
Kleibrink (0-4) kept pace early with the teams alternating deuces in one and two followed by singles in three and four. Lawton pulled away from there though taking two in the fifth and stealing one in the sixth.
In other Players’ Championship action, Russia’s Anna Sidorova improved to a 2-1 record with a 4-2 win in seven ends over Switzerland’s Michele Jaeggi (2-2). Sidorova broke a 1-1 tie with a single steal in the fifth and swiped two more points in the sixth.
Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin (2-2) stole four points in the second but needed a deuce in an extra end for a 9-7 victory over Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott (1-3).
Edmonton’s Laura Crocker earned her first win of the tournament with a 9-3 victory over Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont. Crocker scored four pairs of points, including double steals in the fourth and seventh ends. Both teams hold 1-2 records.
Renee Sonnenberg scored three in the seventh and stole one in the eighth to defeat Chelsea Carey 6-3. Sonnenberg’s Grande Prairie, Alta., rink is now 2-2 while Carey’s Winnipeg team is 1-2 and faces Canadian champion Rachel Homan in Draw 12 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
