Jones, Sonnenberg off to Players’ Championship playoffs
TORONTO — Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones advanced to the playoff round of the Players’ Championship with a 6-3 victory over Michele Jaeggi of Switzerland in a tiebreaker Friday night at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre.
The four-time Players’ Championship winner Jones blanked the first couple of ends and her patience to score big paid off with a three-ender in the third. Jaeggi was forced to a single in four, Jones matched with a point in five and stole two in six to lead 6-1. Jaeggi took two in the seventh to cut the deficit but ran out of rock early in the eighth.
Renee Sonnenberg of Grande Prairie, Alta., also qualified for the quarterfinals defeating Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni 4-1. Sonnenberg broke a 1-1 tie with a single in the fifth and added steals in the sixth and seventh ends.
Two more women’s tiebreakers are scheduled for Saturday morning with Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin facing Anna Sidorova of Russia and Winnipeg’s Chelsea Carey playing Edmonton’s Laura Crocker. The winners advance to the quarterfinals later that afternoon followed by the semifinals in the evening. The final is set for Sunday morning.
