Jones downs Kim to reach Masters quarterfinals
TRURO, N.S. — Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones punched the final playoff ticket in the Masters with a 9-2 rout in only five ends over EunJung Kim of South Korea during Saturday morning’s tiebreaker draw.
The reigning Olympic gold medallist Jones scored three-enders in the first, third and fifth ends while forcing Kim to singles in two and four.
Jones is set to face two-time Masters winner Rachel Homan of Ottawa in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Sasaktoon’s Steve Laycock took two in the sixth and stole one in the seventh to lift his team to a 6-3 victory over Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., and qualify for the final men’s playoff spot. Laycock will meet defending Masters champion Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., in the quarterfinals.
The Masters is the first major and second event of the 2015-16 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season and runs through to Sunday at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.
