Jennifer Jones wins inaugural women’s Players’ Championship title
CALGARY — Jennifer Jones captured the inaugural Players’ Championship women’s title scoring two in the 11th end to defeat Cheryl Bernard 10-8 in the final.
The Winnipeg-based team of Jones, third Cathy Overton-Clapham, second Jill Officer and lead Georgina Wheatcroft earned $30,000.
Jones, this year’s Tournament of Hearts runner-up, finished the round-robin portion with a 3-1 record, beat Debbie McCormick 9-5 during the quarterfinals and thumped Cathy King 8-2 in the semifinals.
Bernard, of Calgary, also went 3-1 through pool play and edged Renee Sonnenberg 6-5 in the quarters and Olympic bronze medallist Shannon Kleibrink 8-6 in the semis.
The Players’ Championship has been held annually since 1993 as a men’s invitational and has been the centrepiece of the Grand Slam of Curling since the inception of the series in 2001.
