Stoughton snatches Masters title from Simmons in extra end
HUMBOLDT, Sask. — Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton captured the Masters Grand Slam of Curling title scoring a 5-4 comeback win over Pat Simmons of Moose Jaw, Sask., in Sunday’s final.
Simmons led 4-3 coming home but the local favourite missed a tap shot that gave Stoughton a steal and sent the game into the extra frame.
In the 11th, Simmons again came up short when he attempted to fire an open shot to the four-foot circle that came up heavy.
“Hats off to the guys for hanging in there in 10 and 11,” Stoughton said in a World Curling Tour release. “I feel badly for Pat. The whole game was unbelievable curling, just fantastic shotmaking.”
Stoughton, third Jon Mead, second Garry Van Den Berghe and lead Steve Gould earned their first career Masters title after finishing runner-up at the event a year ago and claimed $30,000.
“It’s a tough one, and I hope we can bounce back,” said Simmons, who took $18,000.
