Jacobs edges Laycock in extra end at Players’ Championship
TORONTO — Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., covered the button in the extra end to win 5-4 over Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock during Players’ Championship Draw 11 action Friday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
The reigning Olympic gold medallist Jacobs moved up to a 3-1 record with one game remaining in pool play Laycock is the opposite at 1-3.
After trailing by two after the second end, Jacobs settled for one in the third and stole three straight singles in the fourth, sixth and seventh ends to go up 4-2. Laycock got a deuce in the eighth to tie it up and force the extra end. Jacobs faced four counters and threw an out-turn draw that brothers E.J. and Ryan Harnden dragged right to the lid.
Elsewhere, Jeff Stoughton scored a deuce in the eighth to lift his team to a 6-5 victory over former teammate Reid Carruthers in an all-Winnipeg matchup. Stoughton stays in contention with a 2-2 record while Carruthers dropped to 1-3.
Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., stole one in the eighth to edge Toronto’s John Epping 6-5. Howard evened his record to 2-2 while Epping is at 3-1.
Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher stole one in the seventh and swiped another point in eight to defeat Calgary’s Kevin Koe 5-3 in a Battle of Alberta. Both teams are at 3-2 records.
In lone women’s division match, Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland stole in seven and eight to stay in the mix with a 2-3 record following a 5-4 victory over Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson (0-5).
