Jacobs edges Edin in extra end at Players’ Championship

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Reigning Olympic gold medallist Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., scored three in the extra end to lift his team to a 7-4 victory over Sweden’s Niklas Edin in Draw 8 action Thursday night at the Players’ Championship. 

Edin, who earned bronze at the Sochi Winter Games, led 3-0 early stealing singles through the first three ends. Jacobs shook off the deficit with a deuce in the fourth and earned a steal of one in the fifth to tie it. Another steal in seven gave Jacobs a 4-3 lead and Edin added a point in eight to force the extra frame.

The win improved Jacobs’s record to 2-1 while Edin is now 2-2 at the fourth and final Grand Slam of Curling event of the season.

Elsewhere, Calgary’s Kevin Koe (3-0) scored three in the seventh and stole two in the eighth to top Brad Gushue 9-6 and hand the St. John’s, N.L., team their first loss of the tournament. Gushue is now 3-1 at the Players’ Championship with one more round-robin game to go.

Scotland’s David Murdoch (1-2) scored a single in the seventh and stole one in the eighth to earn his first win of the tournament with a 6-4 victory over Glenn Howard. The loss dropped Howard’s team from Penetanguishene, Ont., to a 1-3 record.

Toronto’s John Epping defeated Switzerland’s Sven Michel 6-2 in seven ends. Epping (2-1) pulled away early with three in the first followed by a steal of one in the second. Michel’s team fell to an 0-4 record with the loss and have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin (1-3) scored a single in the final end to win 5-4 over Switzerland’s Michele Jaeggi (1-3) in the lone women’s division match on the draw.
