Jacobs downs Stoughton at Players’ Championship

TORONTO — Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., picked up a 7-1 victory in six ends over Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton during Draw 3 Wednesday in the Players’ Championship Wednesday at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The reigning Olympic gold medallist Jacobs got on a roll early taking two in the first and stealing a pair in the second. Stoughton got on the board with a single in three, but Jacobs matched with a point in four and slid away with steals in five and six to end the game early.

Stoughton is stepping back from competitive curling following the event as he looks to go out on top.

Elsewhere, Toronto’s John Epping earned a 7-3 win over Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers. Epping scored deuces in the first and fourth ends and added a steal of one in the fifth to lead 5-1. Carruthers counted two in the sixth but Epping matched with another pair in seven.

Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., edged Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock 4-3 with a single in the eighth end.

In the women’s division, Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald scored two in the eighth end to lift her rink to a 6-5 win over Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont. It was the second round-robin game for both teams as they now hold identical 1-1 records.

Edmonton’s Val Sweeting tapped for a single in the extra end to win 7-6 over Margaretha Sigfridsson of Sweden. The reigning Masters champion Sweeting (1-1) made a takeout to count three in the first. Sigfridsson (0-2) settled for a single in the second but was on a steal streak swiping points in four consecutive ends to go up 5-3. Sweeting picked up another three-ender in seven to retake the lead and Sigfridsson tied it with a single in the eighth to force the extra frame.

The Players’ Championship continues with Draw 4 action at 3:30 p.m. ET.
