Jacobs bounces Howard from Masters in tiebreakers
SELKIRK, Man. — Olympic champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., charged late in the game to beat defending champion Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., 6-2 in the Saturday morning tiebreakers at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling.
Trailing 2-1, Jacobs took the lead with a deuce in the sixth, stole one in the seventh and added two more points in the eighth to qualify for the playoffs.
Elsewhere, Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton held off Calgary’s John Morris 6-4. Stoughton broke a 2-2 tie scoring a deuce in the fourth and stole one in the fifth to go up by three. Morris settled for a single in the sixth and stole one in the seventh to close within one, but Stoughton tacked on another single with the hammer coming home.
Stoughton will play a second tiebreaker against Niklas Edin of Sweden.
In the women’s division, Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni edged Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald 3-2 with a single in the eighth end and Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson scored one in the sixth and stole a point in the seventh to slip past Russia’s Anna Sidorova 6-4.
