Homan tops Tirinzoni in WFG Masters quarterfinals
GUELPH, Ont. — Ottawa’s Team Rachel Homan advanced to the semifinals of the WFG Masters after ousting Team Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland 8-4 on Saturday.
Homan is looking to win a third consecutive Grand Slam of Curling title and a record-extending 18th women’s championship in the series.
After giving up a steal of one in the second, Homan bounced back big time in the third by knocking out three of Tirinzoni’s stones to count three of her own for a 3-1 lead.
After Team Tirinzoni’s fourth Alina Pätz hit for a single in the fourth, Homan took two more points in the fifth for a 5-2 advantage.
Tirinzoni matched with a pair of points in the sixth to close the gap, but it was game over after Homan bumped into the pile to count another three in the seventh.
Homan will play Team Eun-jung Kim in the evening semifinals. The South Korean club advanced with an 8-1 rout over Japan’s Team Satsuki Fujisawa.
Team Anna Hasselborg and Team Isabella Wranå clash in an all-Swedish showdown in the other semifinal.
Hasselborg eliminated Japan’s Team Momoha Tabata 7-4 and Wranå ousted Team Kerri Einarson of Gimli, Man., 5-2 in the quarterfinals.
Calgary’s Team Brad Jacobs plays Team Bruce Mouat of Scotland and Winnipeg’s Team Matt Dunstone goes up against Team Ross Whyte of Scotland in the men’s semifinals.
Jacobs beat Germany’s Team Marc Muskatewitz 7-4, Mouat brushed aside Switzerland’s Team Yannick Schwaller 8-2, Dunstone defeated Team Korey Dropkin of the United States 7-5 and Whyte eliminated Sweden’s Team Niklas Edin 5-2 in the quarterfinals.
