Homan tops Middaugh at Masters to stay undefeated

SELKIRK, Man. — Ottawa’s Rachel Homan earned a 7-4 victory over Sherry Middaugh, of Coldwater, Ont., during Draw 6 action Thursday morning at the Masters.

The double defending champion Homan moved up to a 2-0 record in the first Grand Slam of Curling tournament of the season.

Homan overcame a 2-0 deficit to start the match. Middaugh was forced to draw for a single in the first while facing three counters but stole a point in the second when Homan attempted a double takeout and only eliminated one rock.

After Homan settled for a single in the third, the two-time Canadian champion stole two in the fourth to grab the lead when Middaugh faced three counters again and couldn’t get shot rock. Middaugh settled for one in the fifth to tie it, however, Homan held control down the stretch scoring a deuce in six, limiting Middaugh to a single in seven, and tacked on two more points in eight.

Elsewhere, Edmonton’s Val Sweeting also improved to a 2-0 record with a 7-4 win over Russia’s Anna Sidorova (1-1).

Saskatoon’s Sherry Anderson scored one in the extra end to edge Margaretha Sigfridsson of Sweden 6-5. Both teams hold 1-1 records.

Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin earned a point in the final end to lift her team to a 3-2 win over Allison Flaxey of Listowel, Ont. Nedohin and Flaxey are at 1-2.
