Defending champ Homan to face Muirhead in Masters women’s final
ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — Defending champion Rachel Homan of Ottawa has a chance to make it two in a row at the Masters after a marathon three-win Saturday secured her spot in the final.
Homan posted a 2-2 round-robin record that forced her squad into a detour through the tiebreakers. The reigning Canadian champion and world bronze medallist defeated Winnipeg’s Chelsea Carey 5-1 in the morning to qualify for the playoffs and topped Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin 6-3 in the afternoon quarterfinal round. Homan capped the day booking her berth in the championship game with a three-ender in the seventh to defeat Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott 6-3 during the evening semifinal draw.
Homan faces reigning world champion Eve Muirhead of Scotland for the women’s title Sunday. Muirhead scored deuces in the second and fourth and stole a pair in the seventh end to oust Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones 7-3.
It’s the second consecutive Grand Slam final for Muirhead, who became the youngest skip to win a title in the series at age 22 when she captured the Players’ Championship in April.
