Homan continues strong start at Players’ Championship
TORONTO — Ottawa’s Rachel Homan moved up to a 3-0 record in the Players’ Championship following a 5-3 victory over Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald during Draw 6 action Thursday morning at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Homan scored all of her points in the first half counting three in the opening end and two in the third. McDonald (1-2) settled for singles in two and four and stole a point in five. Homan blanked the sixth and seventh ends and ran McDonald out of rocks in the final frame.
Elsewhere, Sherry Middaugh (2-1) of Coldwater, Ont., earned a 7-4 victory over Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson (0-3). Middaugh scored a deuce in the first and Sigfridsson got one in the second. Middaugh matched with another point in four and stole three in the fifth. Sigfridsson clawed back with a three-ender in six and Middaugh got one in the seventh.
Edmonton’s Val Sweeting also improved to a 2-1 record with another extra end win defeating Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni 6-5. Tirinzoni (1-2) stole one the second and Sweeting matched in three. The rinks alternated singles through four and five and Tirinzoni added another in six. Sweeting grabbed the lead with three in the seventh and Tirinzoni got two in eight to send it into the extra end. Sweeting sat shot rock on the button with her first skip stone and Tirinzoni hit and rolled too far with her final throw. Sweeting, the reigning Masters champion, fell 5-4 to Middaugh during the opening draw and edged Sigfridsson 7-6 in an extra end during Draw 3.
