Gushue, Edin cruise through Draw 6 at Players’ Championship
SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., improved to 3-0 in round-robin play at the Players’ Championship rolling past Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., 7-1 during Draw 6 action Thursday morning.
Gushue broke a 1-1 tie with a three-ender in the fourth and added steals of one in the fifth and two in the sixth for early handshakes.
Howard, who topped Gushue in last month’s National final to earn his 14th Grand Slam title, dropped to a 1-2 record at the fourth and final Grand Slam of Curling event of the season.
Elsewhere, Sweden’s Niklas Edin crushed Switzerland’s Sven Michel 7-2 in only five ends. The Olympic bronze medallist Edin (2-1) opened the scoring with three in the first and stole singles in the second and third ends to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. Michel (0-3) managed to score a deuce in the fourth, but Edin replied with a pair of his own in five and the teams shook hands.
Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni (3-0) remains undefeated on the women’s side after fending off Julie Hastings (0-3) of Thornhill, Ont., to win 6-5.
Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton, who won the Players’ Championship in this rink in 2012, fell 8-4 to Michele Jaeggi from Switzerland. Both Lawton and Jaeggi are at 1-2.
Calgary’s Crystal Webster (2-1) earned a 5-4 extra-end victory over Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin (0-3).
