Edin rolls past Shuster to earn third win at KIOTI Tractor Champions Cup
REGINA — Sweden’s Niklas Edin improved to a 3-1 record in the KIOTI Tractor Champions Cup with a convincing 7-1 victory Friday morning over John Shuster of the United States.
Edin scored a deuce off the bat in the first, forced Shuster to a single in the second and then took two more points in the third for an early 4-1 lead.
Shuster (2-2) conceded a single steal in the fourth and gave up two more points in the fifth then shook hands.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg’s Matt Dunstone downed Pat Ferris from Grimsby, Ont., 7-1 to remain undefeated and qualify for the playoffs.
After Ferris (0-4) was forced to a single in the first, Dunstone (4-0) slid away with a deuce in the second followed by steals of one in the third, two in the fourth and back-to-back singles in the fifth and sixth.
In women’s play, Tabitha Peterson from the United States scored a single in the eighth end to edge Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones 7-6.
Team Peterson wrapped up their round-robin schedule with a 4-1 record to qualify for the playoffs with Team Jones at 3-2.
Peterson, second Becca Hamilton and lead Tara Peterson are just playing as a trio this week. Third Cory Thiesse is resting after winning gold last week at the world mixed doubles championship in South Korea.
Eun-Ji Gim of South Korea scored three in the eighth end to beat Isabelle Ladouceur from Dundas, Ont., 8-7.
Gim is now level at 2-2 with Ladouceur dropping to 1-3.

The KIOTI Tractor Champions Cup is the sixth and final Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event of the season featuring 12 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams. … Both divisions are split into two pools of six teams for round-robin play. The best six teams overall qualify for Saturday’s quarterfinals with the top two receiving byes to the semifinals. … The finals are scheduled for Sunday.
