Curlers react to Brad Gushue’s comeback from fall

TRURO, N.S. — It was a scary sight at the Pinty’s GSOC Masters during the men’s quarterfinals Saturday when Brad Gushue of St. John’s lost his balance, slipped and hit his head on the ice during the fourth end of his game against Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock.

Gushue, the 2006 Olympic gold medallist and a three-time Grand Slam champion, was hospitalized and needed stitches but was cleared to return and made an unbelievable comeback in the seventh to finish the game.

Here is a snippet of the reaction from the curling community:

Brent Laing, Team Koe second

“That was an odd situation. I didn’t see it happen and when they had the camera on him I didn’t want to look just in case. I didn’t want to see anything that I didn’t want to see. It was great to see him come back, obviously, but any time somebody gets hurt, especially in curling when it’s so rare, it’s a bit of a shock and that’s why it was so quiet out there. All the players were kind of stunned. But it sounds like he’s good and he’s doing like any true Canadian hockey player would do and coming back and showing the world that curlers are tough too when needed but hopefully he’s okay.”

Jim Cotter, Team Cotter skip

“Brad is a friend and it’s scary. It puts things into perspective a little bit that it’s just a game out there and all of the curlers were very concerned and we’re happy to see him back.”
