TRURO, N.S. — Chelsea Carey and her Edmonton-based club are through to the quarterfinals of the Canadian Beef Masters.

Carey clipped Team Nina Roth, from the U.S., in a 6-3 set during Saturday morning’s tiebreaker draw.

The reigning Meridian Canadian Open champion Carey broke a 2-2 tie with a deuce in the sixth and added a steal in the seventh to advance.

Team Carey will play Halifax’s Team Kaitlyn Jones in the women’s quarterfinals. The reigning world junior champions, who received a sponsor’s exemption to enter the event, have been on roll finishing round-robin play at 3-1.

Meanwhile, Sweden’s Team Anna Hasselborg stole away a playoff spot from Team Kerri Einarson of Gimli, Man., by hammering a 7-2 victory in five ends. Tied 2-2, Hasselborg stole a couple in the fourth and pirated three more in the fifth to qualify for the playoffs.

Team Hasselborg also take on a world championship club named Team Jones — Team Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg that is — in the quarterfinals.

The other women’s quarterfinals see Ottawa’s Team Rachel Homan versus Winnipeg’s Team Darcy Robertson and No. 1 seed Team Casey Scheidegger of Lethbridge, Alta., against Team Tracy Fleury of East St. Paul, Man.

In the men’s tiebreaker, Halifax’s Team Jamie Murphy drew in the eighth end for the 5-4 win over Winnipeg’s Team Reid Carruthers. Murphy hasn’t qualified yet though as his crew now go up against Team Matt Dunstone in a second tiebreaker.

Three men’s quarterfinals are set: Team Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., vs. Team Niklas Edin of Sweden, Scotland’s Team Ross Paterson vs. Toronto’s Team John Epping, and Scotland’s Team Bruce Mouat vs. Team John Shuster of the U.S.

No. 1 seed Team Kevin Koe await the tiebreaker winner between Murphy and Dunstone. The Koe vs. Murphy/Dunstone game will be played alongside the women’s quarterfinals.

Broadcast coverage of the Canadian Beef Masters resumes with the men’s quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m. ET / 7:30 a.m. PT on Sportsnet followed by the women’s quarterfinals at 3 p.m. ET / Noon ET on CBC. Watch online streaming at Sportsnet NOW (Canada) or Yare (international).

The semifinals and finals are set for Sunday.

NOTES: Winners take home $30,000 of the $250,000 total purse plus berths to the season-ending Humpty’s Champions Cup in April. … Points are also on the line for the Pinty’s Cup, which is awarded to the overall season champions following the conclusion of the Players’ Championship.
