Carey edges Feltscher to continue strong start at WFG Masters

OKOTOKS, Alta. — Calgary’s Chelsea Carey climbed to a 2-0 record in the WFG Masters after edging Binia Feltscher of Switzerland 7-5 Wednesday afternoon.

With the game tied, Carey held the hammer coming home and saw just enough of Feltscher’s counter to take it out and count two.

The reigning Canadian women’s champion Carey clipped Russia’s Anna Sidorova 4-3 during the opening draw Tuesday night.

Elsewhere, Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland doubled up on Winnipeg’s Kerri Einarson 6-3. Tirinzoni opens with a 1-0 record while Einarson fell to 0-2.

In men’s division action, Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen drew for the winning point in the extra end to beat John Morris of Vernon, B.C., 7-6.  The defending champion McEwen (1-0) rallied late scoring three in the seventh to grab a 6-5 lead and Morris (0-2) tied it in the eighth to force the extra frame.

Scotland’s Kyle Smith bounced back from a tough morning loss to compatriot David Murdoch to top Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers 5-3. Both Smith and Carruthers are level with 1-1 records.

Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock improved to a 2-0 record taking a 6-3 set over Toronto’s John Epping (0-1). Second Pat Janssen is back in the Team Epping lineup after missing the past two tour events due to a fractured orbital bone.
