Carey doubles up on Tirinzoni to start Masters run

SELKIRK, Man. — Edmonton’s Chelsea Carey held on to defeat Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni 6-3 during Draw 2 action Wednesday at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling.

Carey, who is originally from Winnipeg, broke a 1-1 tie with a deuce in the third and added a steal of one in the fourth to cushion the lead. Tirinzoni came back with a single in the sixth and stole one in the seventh to narrow the gap, but Carey added another deuce in the final end.

It was the Grand Slam of Curling debut for Carey’s new team featuring third Laura Crocker, second Taylor McDonald and lead Jen Gates.

“We love the arena atmosphere and everything and for me being back in Manitoba is pretty cool so it was neat,” Carey said. “It was nice to come out there and it was a little tough early with some misses, the ice was a little bit green but that’s normal at the start of a Slam, so we figured it out and then it got better after that.”

Elsewhere, Valerie Sweeting scored two in the seventh and stole one in the final end to lift her team to a 7-4 win over Heather Nedohin in an all-Edmonton rink matchup. Sweeting made a last-minute roster change prior to the Masters with third Andrea Crawford leaving the team. Cathy Overton-Clapham will fill in during the tournament.

Reigning world champion Binia Feltscher of Switzerland stole two in the third en route to a 5-3 victory over Saskatoon’s Sherry Anderson.

The Masters continues Wednesday afternoon with Draw 3 action starting at 1:30 p.m. ET / 12:30 p.m. CT.
