Carey completes comeback to clip Roth at Masters
TRURO, N.S. — Chelsea Carey surged in the second half to score a 6-5 victory over Nina Roth in round-robin action Wednesday morning at the Canadian Beef Masters.
Carey and her crew from Edmonton trailed 4-0 at halftime to the 2018 U.S. Olympic Team, erased the deficit with a four-ender in the fifth and jumped ahead with a steal in the sixth.
Roth was forced to one in the seventh to tie it again. Carey held shot rock in eight and didn’t need to throw her last as Roth crashed on one of her own.
The Canadian Beef Masters is the second event and first major of the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season taking place at Rath Eastlink Community Centre and featuring 15 of the top men’s teams and 15 of the top women’s teams from around the world. Divisions are split into three pools for round-robin play during the week with the top eight overall qualifying for Saturday’s quarterfinals. The semifinals and finals are set for Sunday.

Elsewhere in the second draw, Team Casey Scheidegger of Lethbridge, Alta., edged Sweden’s Team Anna Hasselborg 6-5 in an extra end.
Winnipeg’s Team Darcy Robertson doubled up on Scotland’s Team Eve Muirhead 8-4.
In men’s play, Scotland’s Team Bruce Mouat made off like bandits in a 7-2 victory over Norway’s Team Steffen Walstad. Mouat stole singles in the second and fifth ends and finished the game early swiping three more points in the sixth.
Sweden’s Team Niklas Edin earned a 7-3 win over Scotland’s Team Ross Paterson. With the game tied 1-1, Edin took two in the third and stole one in the fourth to pull away. Paterson potted a pair in the sixth to claw back but shook hands after Edin dropped a three count in the seventh.
Round-robin action continues Wednesday morning at 11:30 a.m. AT. Broadcast coverage begins Thursday at 11:30 a.m. AT (10:30 a.m. ET) on Sportsnet and online at Sportsnet NOW (Canada) and Yare (global).
NOTES: Winners take home $30,000 of the $250,000 total purse plus berths to the season-ending Humpty’s Champions Cup in April. … Points are also on the line for the Pinty’s Cup, which is awarded to the overall season champions following the conclusion of the Players’ Championship.
