Bruce Korte wins inaugural Masters title
GANDER, N.L. — Saskatoon’s Bruce Korte captured the inaugural Masters Grand Slam of Curling title with a 7-4 victory over Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton during Sunday’s final.
Tied 3-3, Korte scored a deuce in the seventh and never relinquished the lead. The teams traded singles in eight and nine and Korte held on swiping a single steal in the final frame.
Korte earned $25,000 with the victory, Stoughton received $16,000 while semifinalists Wayne Middaugh of Midland, Ont., and Edmonton’s Kevin Park claimed $10,000 each.
Stoughton stole a point in the extra end from Middaugh to win 6-5 and flip the script of their rematch from the Canadian Open final. Korte doubled up on Park 6-3.
The triple knockout preliminary round featured a “battle of the sexes” with Kelley Law from B.C. competing in the 24-team field. Law, who is set to represent Canada at the upcoming Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, defeated John Boland and Neil Power in the last-chance C Event before falling to Park.
