WCT Roundup: Homan victorious in Saskatoon

Rachel Homan’s team captured the Colonial Square Ladies Classic title following a decisive 8-3 victory over Tracy Fleury’s squad in Monday’s final.

Homan, from Ottawa, went undefeated through the tournament posting a perfect 6-0 record to earn $7,500 and 52.746 points.

The No. 1 ranked Team Homan opened the scoring with a huge four points in the second end. Fleury narrowed the gap with a deuce in three followed by a steal of one in four, but Homan pulled away taking two in five and stealing a pair in six.

Saskatoon’s Ashley Quick filled in for Team Homan second Joanne Courtney during the semifinals and final. Courtney was playing in her first event of the season and is easing her way into a busy year after returning from mat leave.

Team Fleury, from East St. Paul, Man., competed in their third final of the season already following a championship win at the Cargill Curling Training Centre Icebreaker in late August and a runner-up result in the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic last month.

In Lower Sackville, N.S., Mary-Anne Arsenault of Dartmouth doubled up on Halifax’s Jill Brothers 6-3 to win the Curling Store Cashspiel women’s title Sunday.

Stuart Thompson of Dartmouth topped Halifax’s Kendal Thompson 6-2 in the men’s final.

UP NEXT: The WCT Uiseong International Curling Cup is underway in South Korea featuring Regina’s Matt Dunstone, Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., Scott McDonald of Kingston, Ont., Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen among others on the men’s side and Winnipeg’s Theresa Cannon, Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni and Nina Roth and Jamie Sinclair of the United States in the women’s division.

Also highlighting Week 11 is the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard, which starts Thursday at High Park Club featuring the likes of Calgary’s Team Kevin Koe, Team Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Toronto’s own Team John Epping.
