Tour Roundup: Schwaller cousins sweep Oakville Tankard
OAKVILLE, Ont. — It was a double win for Switzerland’s Schwaller family Monday at the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard.
Xenia Schwaller’s team took the women’s title while cousin Yannick Schwaller and his squad were victorious on the men’s side.
The reigning world junior champions Team Xenia Schwaller stole three in the seventh end and defeated Calgary’s Team Kayla Skrlik 7-6 in the women’s final.
Both clubs were competing in their second straight final to start their seasons. Schwaller, ranked 11th in the world, was runner-up in last week’s Oslo Cup in Norway while Skrlik was also a finalist at the Icebreaker Challenge in Morris, Man.
Meanwhile, Team Yannick Schwaller had a grid of a tournament after losing to Germany’s Team Marc Muskatewitz 6-4 in the B-qualifiers of the triple knockout stage Sunday afternoon.
The No. 7 ranked Schwaller defeated Team Sam Mooibroek of Whitby, Ont., 7-3 during the last-chance C-qualifiers in the evening draw to advance to the playoffs.
Schwaller then fended off Scotland’s Team Bruce Mouat, the No. 1 ranked team in the world, 9-8 in the quarterfinals Monday morning and eliminated Team Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., 7-5 in the afternoon semifinals to set up a rematch against Muskatewitz for the title.
It came down to an extra end with Muskatewitz holding the last rock, but he had to make a hit with Schwaller sitting two stones in the four-foot circle. Muskatewitz connected and rolled in, however, he was unable to outcount the other stone as Schwaller stole the 6-5 victory.
It was also the second consecutive final for Schwaller after finishing runner-up to Mouat at last month’s Baden Masters in Switzerland.
SAVILLE SHOOTOUT
Saskatoon’s Team Mike McEwen and Team Momoha Tabata of Japan claimed the Saville Shootout titles Monday in Edmonton.
McEwen defeated Winnipeg’s Team Jordon McDonald 8-5 in the men’s final while Tabata topped compatriots Team Satsuki Fujisawa 7-5 in the women’s final.
SUTHERLAND SASKTOUR ICEBREAKER
Team Sherrilee Orsted of Moose Jaw topped Saskatoon’s Team Ashley Thevenot 8-3 Sunday to capture the Sutherland SaskTour Icebreaker title in Saskatoon.
